None go by - Leeds - ealry days of fishing

NONE - GO - BY POND. LEEDS (north).

Otley Old Rd, Horsforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS18 5HZ. TEL:0113 284 2206.

Just been reading someone's blog about fishing and it looked like fun so I thought I'd have a bash.

I went to None Go by last Wednesday and had such a good session I went on the saturday as well. On both occasions I was on the 'CANAL' pond.

Baring in mind I'm relatively new to fishing (used to go when I was a young lad), and have just recenlty been getting back into it by using a simple 6 meter whip in the local canal (7 silvers being my best catch - biggest being about 1.5lb), I was thrilled to catch 36 fish on my first trip to Non Go By! This included one bream of about 3 pound - which was double anything I'd caught in my (until this point) 4 week forey into fihsing.

I then eyed up a pole (the ron Thompson gangster pole - cheapest one going - to let me get a taster), and planned a second trip to Non-Go-By. I was intrigued by the level of accuracy you seemed to be able to get when feeding your spot. Also, what seems to be the other major benefit of the pole, the subtlety and/or discreetness with which you can get your rig in the water (no splashing from casting) is something I wanted to integrate into my approach.

On the Saturday I was back on the bank at none go by - happy as a pig in sh*^t!

Well I be jeseus! I only went and caught about 6 carp of around 4-5lbs!! And lost track of my total 'fish-count'.

At the beginning I found I was getting loads of little silvers and hate it when I have trouble getting hooks out of the tiny ones when it swallows deep. It turns out the first fish was just such a case. Miniscule little thing, couldn't even get the disgorger in its mouth due to the maggot stuffed in its chops.

to try and put the tiny fish off, I decided to go for double maggot (still on size 20 hook, 1.5lb hook length, 2.5 mainline) and pulled out a small common about 2.5lb!

Interesting, I thought. So i went for more double maggot, and eventually triple maggot. This is when the carp starting landing.

I got snapped off by some big lump and moved up to size 16 hook and stuck to triple magot.

Had a great day.

My Pole got pulled in at one point. I was being very naughty and put the 'gangster-pole' down for a matter of seconds (having walked along to another peg - away from all other anglers) and some moster took it under right before my eyes. I thought I was hallouscinating (cant be bothered to spell check that - but think I'm close)!

Any way, it emerged about 40 seconds later about 30 meters down the canal (right where the lillys are - near the entrance/car park). I snapped out of my swearing fit and grabbed by landing net, ran round the other side of the cananl and spent the nex 5 minutes getting my pole out. The fish had snapped off after snaggin the line on one of the crayfish traps.

Incidentally, the traps really work. I had to pull one out to get my line un-snagged and there were 3 of the little fellas in there!

So, after this ordeal I went back to the spot I had stalked out, got my pole set back up, and dropped my line back in, aling with a gradual sprinkle of maggot and hemp. Within 1 miunte I pulled out one of the aforementioned 4lb carp.

I was happy as larry.

I seemed to be the only persone willing to move peg on the canal section - and was certainly having more success than anyone else.

As I was catching more, and the other guys were seeming catching less and less, they were starting to look more and more pissed off with me laughing my head off and jumping around like a kid each time I got another fish.

The last fish I pulled out was what I now understand to be a 'golden tench'. Fought like crazy for it's size. It was perhaps 1-1.5lb, but felt like a 3lb carp. It also fought for longer and jumped around for longer on the bank before I could get hook out.

Dusk was approaching on the chilly October evening (approx 6pm) so I figured the Golden Tench was a nice way to end the day.

Golden tench

Lots of silvers like this  baby bream (I think)!

My first carp on nongo by - & first I've caught alone
Had loads of silvers this kind of size

Nice mirror - can't turn it round for soe reason... Will work that out for next time

Next I'm planning to go to cottingley springs pond AKA: the gypsey pond, Leeds.

I heard about the place, then read the Welsh blogger Paul's write up on it. (thats the blog which inspired me to write this little cherrub)

http://coarsefishingpaul.blogspot.co.uk/

I went today to scope the place out and have a chat with the farmer/owner (friendly chap by the way).

Looks pretty tasty. Pretty small but intimate fishing no doubt. I reckin on a week day at this time of year I'll have the spot to myself. Nobody there today but me and the multiple farm-dogs.

I spotted huge thing in there accompanied by some smaller carp. I was told by the owner they are up to 25lbs in there... he did tell me the largest but I forget. it could have been 28lb.

Best hope I don't actually get that one or it may snap my pole, certainly the 3.5lb hook length I intend to use!
